I think the wording of this question was raised a little disparagingly. Happy

In my view their is absolutely no shame in it at all. However, I believe like many specialities it stifles you to one particular area and doesn't make you a balanced person.

I prefer to do full power competitions and conversely to this thread I actually put more effort in to increasing squat and deadlift numbers. The squat and deadlift will give you a greater amount of kg's to add to the total, increasing your chance to win.

It's like being a cyclist in a room full of triathletes, then saying you're one of them.

As long as you can deadlift more than you can bench, it's all up to you.

Due to knee issues, I can't really commit to squatting on a regular basis, especially nothing heavy. Due to this, I'm unable to compete in powerlifting. You're either a powerlifter, or you're not!

I've heard he squatted in the low 700's as a much lighter lifter, not sure how true it is

Yeah, most good Bench only guys can Squat/Dead a fair bit but generally choose not to train them/compete at the same level.

This tears me up. I love bodybuilding Rev too.

It was more of an observation, this whole thread. At first I used to be very much anti-single lift for powerlifting. But then I realised that I got a boner when deadlift only events were on so I figured I should accept it.

My squat is a poor man's number in my total. I'll be deadlift/bench dominant for life but I was curious if bench only got much respect other than outside of USA.

Theres absolutely no shame in being bench only, I have been a bench specialist for 3 years after having done PL for 8 before that. Do they ask Usain Bolt if he feels shame because he doesnt run all distances?

I have been to 3 IPF world bench press championships and it is very obvious that a lot of countries have a huge interest in the sport. For example in Hungary bench only is much bigger that PL. The first worlds i went to had a record number of competitiors for an international competition in IPF.

incline bench and overhead are the most important strength lifts for me
this is real power
as u can see many strongmen have good deadlift currently above 400kg and only 2-3 guys are really strong pressers

pressing always more impressive as it depends more on natural talent

While it would be daft to by a cyclist and call yourself a triathelete it wouldn't be shameful to call yourself a cyclist.

Similarly if you want to do bench only then go for it! Live and let lift!

i have no problem with specialist lifts. i find it enjoyable that someone can only perform 1 lift very well, its entertaining be it bench, deads or grip for example.

i also have no problem with delinquent deadlifts, indeed i wish i could do them, im sure this would ramp up my 1rm. However, i dont think they have a place in strongman though, especially 18" or youll just move the bar 2 inches if your as short as me.

I think there's definitely more shame in calling a comp a 'meet'... This isn't the US

Everyone loves to see a big bench.

If you were in your gym now training, and you look across to see someone benching 5 plates, you'd definitely have respect for that.

The way I see it, bench only, full meet, your off your arse and doing something. Your setting goals and using iron to better yourself. Anyone that does that has my respect. No shame Happy
