After watching the kings of benching over the last few months, I've come to find a new respect for bench press overall. Even though I find it the least satisfying to watch, it's none the less a skill for power-lifting.

A guy in my gym is mediocre for legs and back but he pushes 200+ comfortably with good form. Should he be ashamed? For the strength community, is it frowned upon?

It's surely the least challenging of all the lifts I find but the joe public love it.
"how much do you bench brah?"

Is there any shame in not competing as a powerlifter?

Some people would frown upon it. They would be the same fools who frown upon sumo Deadlift, wide legged squats and charity work.

Best thing to do in life is never give a f**k what anyone thinks and instead crack on with what makes you happy.

I agree with John. Pick a goal and go for it.

I think of Sumo as a different lift to conventional but don't have a problem with people pulling either way. I think it would be more interesting if you had to do both lifts at a meet

I think you should only pull Sumo if you are wearing a Sumo belt and do the foot stomp before your lift.

bench only is fine - it's those who bench more than they squat in full powerlifting meets that need shooting. Grin

One of the first Powerlifters I learned anything from was a Bench only guy, if I remember right he did around 190-200 at around 100 back in the day out of Derby. Big bencher, and he looked impressive.

I once started a thread entitled "I have sinned" in which I admitted to Sugden that I'd performed a bench press.

I've heard he squatted in the low 700's as a much lighter lifter, not sure how true it is
