Would rather not go just to make numbers up would like a chance of winning. Need to make a few trips to a strongman gym and practice some of the events soon.

IMHO you can't worry about winning. On the day lots of things can happen and sage advice has always been that there will always be someone bigger/better/stronger than you.

Just get signed up to one for the experience like I did. I wasn't expecting to do great but finished 4th at the Junction comp.

Why? Who cares if you win a novice show? Novice shows are just for practise until you can move on to proper strongman competitions. No one cares if you win a novice, it is meaningless.

Honestly no one gives a f**k except a few s**tty little gym rat heroes.

So you want to win, good, a competitive nature is important for this, so I assume you want to win at open level?

In which case you'd better wait until you have a 320kg deadlift and a 160kg overhead and you can run with 140kg farmers. Then you might stand a chance of winning something. Except you'll be against guys with 350kg pulls and 180kg overheads.

More to the point they'll be experienced. By the time they're at that level of strength they may well have done two dozen competitions and will be busy kicking your ass while you sit there with your nerves getting the better of you and you realise your nutritional preperation was all wrong.

So we find ourselves back at the start. Find a novice competition, sign up, enjoy it, and let your experience, enjoyment and technical proficiency improve alongside your strength.

Or not, whatever.

winning a novice would be nice to do but as a competetive achievement its pretty meaningless. for me, novice comps are all about finding out if you like the sport, picking up tips and tricks, hitting pbs and making connections with other competitors. if you manage to do well, or even win, thats just a bonus.

This.

I did a comp recently, hadn't competed in SM before. In fact hadn't even trained SM before! Haha! But it was fun, and gave me motivation to pour my energy toward SM rather than PL.

Advice taken on board going to attempt to get over to a strongman gym a few times give the events a whirl then get looking for a comp. I wasnt so bothered about winning just dont fancy being near the bottom who wants to compete and finish low wether you are new or not it isnt going to be enjoyable.

You say that mate but it is enjoyable, both comps I've done Ive finished near the bottom but both were great days and made me want to train harder and compete again.

I have finished near the bottom in many comps and enjoyed every one. I would rather throw myself in a comp full of beasts and come last than a comp of part timers and run away with a victory.
