I was benching last night with Macca and a few other lads who are encouraging me to bench cg, i bench quite narrow anyway but they have said that my cg work looks more explosive.

I know kk benches really close but just wondered who else out there does, the only drawback i can see is more pressure on the wrists.

Any thoughts?

I've done 200 CGBP...mainly because its a lot less painful on my f**ked shoulder

IMO, you are always going to bench more with a conventional grip if done properly

Lack of shoulder/chest in a CGBP means it naturally wont be as strong

I know Phil evans ( phil1983) cg benches around the 200kg mark , insanely strong on any pressing event or gym lift.

I agree with the Trapman, but I think Sob may well be an exception....

His normal grip is a fingers width inside the power ring in any case (which is what most people would call close grip anyway).

All I know is that I saw him just manage 5 touch and go reps with 165kg with his normal grip, go on to do another f**k load of sets with 150kg / 140kg / 130kg, then switch to close grip to do 150kg x 5 Paused, then 160kg x 4 paused and look a whole lot better than he did on his 'normal grip' sets.

I think that it's worth a session of the man's time to see what's what, and as that's what I think, it's all that matters Grin

Yes, there will of course be exceptions to the rule

Try CGBP for a 6 week block...nothing to lose. Plus, IME, your conventional bench wont get any weaker in 6 weeks if still doing CGBP

if its broke don't fix it!

If anything get more technique and arch, hard to see how much leg drive is going into Sob's bench but he looks a very strong flat backer, reduce rom and surely even bigger things to come?

Im an inside the rings man, feel a lot weaker with wide grip, makesmy rom massive but just more comfy and natural

Pretty much no leg drive or arch jimmy.

More arch isn't necessarily going to equal a bigger bench.

no but cut the rom down and im sure it'll add pounds to the bar, not always guaranteed I admit, and not everyone can do it but it should cut out most ppl's weakness which is just a few inches above chest when flat no?

I think we're pretty much on the same page.

Like I said it's not always going to help, a smaller arch can get the chest involved more and for a raw lifter that is going to be the key in getting the weight off the chest and up.

I tend to think the excessive arch has more benefit for equipped lifters, where they get the pop off the chest regardless so a smaller ROM will always lead to a bigger bench.

Just imo.
