I wondered if any of you chaps have much experience with ankle injuries and returning to lower body training?
At the end of January I sprained my ankle pretty badly.
I have had treatment from a sports therapist, iced it, NSADIS, moved onto theraband strengthening exercises, balancing exercises.

About 2 weeks ago after being very careful and testing it out with high box squats I tried to squat to depth with 100kg, 5 sets of 5. It flared up again.
So back to drawing board etc but obviously its not practical to rest it all the time, ive got to go to work I have a family etc etc

Its 6 weeks since the original injury now and I'm wondering if I will always been troublesome, Im currenly back treating it as if it was yesterday I sprained it

Anyone had similar issues and what sort of time scales would we be talking to a strong stable ankle

I gave up playing rugby due to constantly injuring my ankles, and as a result I still have weak ankles now. I was never given advice as a teen on how to promote ankle health, or even the best way to rehab it... All they ever said was rest.

Have a look on youtube for some Kelly Starret stuff, and also Donnie Thomson. both are big on ankle mobility etc, and that might be a good starting point.

Thanks mate but where I currently am with it, I'm far from trying to get mobility back with the joint. Im more in the state of it swells up if I walk for 5 mins on it.

sad news rodge !!

I cant think what might work other than more rest , sprained ankles are just so damn tender and unforgiving !!

I know you probably have one of these but I got a special tight support, special for ankles like ..... it really helped, or mabie just strap it up like a motherf**ker when training

Are you doing the standard R.I.C.E.? And what about anti-inflammatories? Some of the easiest methods work the best Happy

Yeah Si. Iam doing that and ibuprofen and ibuprofen gel also.
Ice does still seem to be effective again but the issue is it swells up again. I cycle to work too and although it's only round trip if 4.5miles I have to go steady with it.

It's just annoying as I was making good progress 3-4 weeks ago. It was a lot stronger and stable, now I fear what ever damaged I had then has increased now

I haven't got one, mate and thought I could get away without one but looks like I may have been wrong. Can you still get your shoes on with these sorts of supports?

Take it you have first hand experience of sprains?

I once did my ankle really bad on a night out, did some weird jackie chan flying kick thing at my mate in the middle of the road and landed with one foot in a pothole, ankle rolled so, so badly, I remember the pain was horrendous and I was absolutely wa**ered. By the time I got home it was like a small football.

I found that solid rest coupled with some very light ankle mobility work/stretching and simply just walking was the fastest way to recovery. NSAIDS are unfortunately essential in recovery and I also found icing and topical creams such as lanosil helped reduce the bruising.

I wouldn't try lifting on it until you are comfortable sprinting on it, if that makes sense. Worked for me.

err mine was from a night out tooo..... Roll-Eyes
As this is like re-swelling of the existing injury there isn't any bruising anymore as such. More a burning feeling on and off.
Its just really aggrevating as it was getting so much better 3 weeks ago it was getting more stable and flexible

MRI to see what damage has been done exactly?
Not too sure about the anatomy of the ankle, but I know that synovial joints that are torn don't hold the synovial fluid any more. A tear of a ligament and/or tendon may mean that fluid is leaking and increasing pressure on a sensory receptor.

I may be chatting s**t here, but I would say go to your GP and tell them you've been resting it, but any form of gentle exercise aggravates the injury and it's affecting your daily life.

Well mate, it has started behaving now and been given the go ahead to start rehab exercises again. Unless anything further/worse happens I see no need to request a scan (pushing for MRI's is an art form too isn't it...!)Wink

Get lighter Dodge. Take the pressure off.
Everything I have aches when I'm heavy. The pains go away when I'm light.

I slightly injured my ankle during a restraint at work and it took YEARS to fully go. It never affected training though.

Its a possibility, however I feel more comfortable at this weight. the only joint that Im having issues with is this ankle, I'm quite missing squatting and deadlifting

I'm guessing you did no rehp and or pylometric warm up execises prior to training post injury mate?

Weak ankles have been the bane of my life for as long as I can remember.

Do you naturally Supinate or Pronate when walking or running.
http://stretchcoach.com/articles/pronation-supination/

I almost feel sick thinking about how it feels to twist an angle that's already been twisted.
Don't take the risk, I would advise a bit of time to let it settle down, make sure your laces are always done up properly, and if its on-going orthotics are an option under the guidance of a gait specialist.
If you cant hold yourself back, You might get away with slow half squats,or leg press either socks/ bare feet or weightlifting shoes, never trainers. just really concentrating on keeping your ankles solid. Ive rolled an injured ankle while squatting in trainers, knee tracked slightly out compressed the out side sole just beyond the point where I had stability. That was the proverbial straw I never came back from...... And I would avoid any sort of Plyos without a descent ankle support or until you feel the inflammation has settled down.
I bought a pair of those supports Andy Murray plays in, good support at the angles I need and decent free movement where I don't.
