A simple enough four

YXXXX
XYXXG
XGXXX

I have decided to change my opening word. I use three factfinders to commence each puzzle. The original sets was THEIR, NOMAD and LUCKY, all the vowels plus "Y" and nine others, I then switched to WAIVE, SOUND and CRYPT, same deal but five vowels in two words which I considered a slight advantage.

Conversations with handsome Jeff (who is much better as this than I) convinced me that "WAIVE" was the weak link here due to the relative rareness of "W" and "V". "ALIVE" would be an improvement but still has the "V"

After much beard stroking I got it down to "AGILE" or "IMAGE". Doctor Google informed me that "L" is almost twice as common as "M" (although that is in language and not just five letter words). Assuming that it is true for five letter words too, "AGILE" gets the vote.

Now I just have to remember this. Habit is a powerful force.

Thank you for your attention.

A tricky five

XXXXY
XXYXX
YYXXX
YXGYG

I have long suspected that the worst opening is "XXXXY" as in my case the last letter us "E", I am now certain of it

A very quick and simple four

XXXXY
XGXYX
XXYXX

Despite the previously discussed worst start possible, it all just fell into place

Attended a competition yesterday as Mitch, a young powerlifter was competing. The comp was local and very well attended, two days, morning and afternoon session each day and the last one (his) had three flights which makes things take longer.

He lifted well, missed is third squat, which is rare and jumped the press command on his first bench, which surprisingly even the centre ref (who gave the command) missed. I didn't though and he will be punished later, probably through the medium of never letting him forget it for the next few years.

The best lift was a 105 lifter who actually only weighed 98.5 do a 320 deadlift and it didn't look too difficult either. That earned him a handshake and a kind word and was worth the entry money alone.

The faces are changing and I didn't recognize that many of them but such is life. One lady who I did recognize asked me if I used to referee, I confirmed I did and we had a good old chat for ten minutes. She told me that I had once told her that she walked onto the platform like she was about to be shot. The consensus was that that was a very good description of her platform comportment generally. It's good to be remembered :-)

No training today as I will have a corn-related, minor medical procedure which involves having gel squirted under the skin to form a padding which hopefully prevent them forming in the first place. This involves local anesthetic which prevents driving for the rest of the day.

A fairly straightforward four

YXXXY
XXYXX
XXXXG

Less than a minutes pondering, but was very hesitant to put this word as although I have heard it many times, I don't believe I have ever seen it written down. Should anyone fail at this today I feel they would be entitled to curse Tracy Bennett within an inch of her life.

Having said that, I have just checked my Collins and it is in there, which in fairness would offer said Tracy Bennett an excellent defence. I still consider it rum.

Yesterday, as previously mentioned, I spent ninety minutes having my feet examined by three women (one teaching and two being taught) as I was a lab rat for a corn prevention treatment.

Gel in injected under the skin to create a pad which would prevent the friction that causes the corns to develop. This replaces Nature's own pad which, like some many other things, fades with age.

The treatment was not at all unpleasant, but you have to keep your weight off it for twenty four hours, walking on one foot and one heel will never be classed as a fun thing to do.

Agree with this completely. I got it in three, but found it very challenging. I could see the answer after my second guess but didn’t think it would be acceptable and spent twenty-five minutes looking for alternatives which proved fruitless.

Can't say I am one hundred percent comfortable with today's word either. Can't properly articulate my objections but neither can I dismiss them.
