According to a chap on the radio, four of the five last European championship winners have conceded fewer than two goals in the whole competition. Make of that whatever you will

So after training young Tess today we went to a boozer in "Little Scotland" which advertized food. Very nuce it was too, but although only three miles from the club it is a rather convuluted route that I an unfamiliar with. On leaving Tess said she would satnav it and I could follow her.

Soon we came to a junction where I thought we should go right but we went left and then to a turning which I would have taken but the satnav did not. My sense of direction is not great and I confuse easily and satnav is science, so trust in that.

It was less than three miles from the club to the pub and soon we had gone farther than that and I still had no idea where we were. The "goose and gander" which is where we turn left had yet to be sighted, and we had passed two narrow bridges that were traffic light controlled that we never saw on the way there.

Tess pulled into a convenient bus stop. "We'll be at the M65 soon" she said, "can you find your way from there" I assured her I could. It transpires that "soon" means "eventually" in chartered accountant speak and on arrival I took the wrong turn and had to turn around and go back the other way. That done I soon saw signs for the M61 and from there was home free.

An eleven mile journey took thirty nine miles. So did science let us down ? It did not. Tess did.

What I thought.

As we both are very familar with the route from our respective homes to the club and unfamilar with the route from the pub to the club. I assumed that the sensible option would put the club postcode in, follow that until we knew where we were and than split and go our separate ways.

What actually happened.

Tess put her home postcode in and assumed that this would take us past the club. A not unreasonable assumption but entirely erroneous.

Moral.

Never leave a pub without taking a piss first.

Your post has be bamboozled on what happened. The Goose and Gander is less than 5 minutes from the club. Leave Oxford Street heading toward Blackrod, turn right just after the car wash and before the Cherry Tree, drive to the end of the road and turn right, follow the road about 1/2 a mile and the Goose and Gander is on your right. How far from there was the pub?

I would guess that the goose and gander is about half way, and after it there are only a couple of turns, but the road does twist and turn a great deal in that area which muddies the waters rather. Had I not had the confidence I had in Tess going back to the right place I am certain that I would have either not got off track in the first place or if I had I would have rather quickly got back on it. The trouble was that I was a long way into a hopeless situation before I realized that I might be in a hopeless situation

Well I finally made it.

Squat, raw, sleeves and boots on, no belt
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
70 x 5

105 x 5
120 x 5
135 x 5
145 x 4
155 x 3
165 x 2
170 x 5
Hurrah again. I was beginning to think I would never reach this point, it has been a rocky road over the past few weeks but kudos to Handsome Jeff for coming up with the idea and kudos to me for having the sense to listen to one who is wise. The last set was not the prettiest I have ever done but the best squat was the last squat which warms the cockles rather. I'll see how I feel tomorrow and make plans from there. I suspect the trick will lie in patience and refusing to rush things.

Dentist tomorrow for the first time in almost two years.

All credit to you on the squats tonight my friend. The final set was an excellent display of grit and determination, a flash of doubt crossed my mind after the 4th as to whether a 5th was possible, but you proved me wrong in fine style!!!

Nice to watch!!!!

Bad news at the dentist, covid has f**ked one of my teeth. Nothing can be done to save it as it is bolloxed below the gum line. It's going to be a bas***d to get at and it's going to be unpleasant, best to leave it for the moment as it is still usable and there are still restrictions on practical dentistry. So maybe in a year or so I will have something horrible to look forward to. According to the man, I am far from alone in this, covid it would seem has f**ked a lot of teeth.Unhappy Unhappy Unhappy Unhappy Unhappy Unhappy Unhappy Unhappy

Very warm and humid tonight, even now I am sweating up a storm. That however may be due to my old school friend cooking me some Jamaican Chicken and rice with kidney beans. By the Lord Harry it was good. Very kind of him and very much appreciated, better than fish finger butties.

Friday, 9th July, start 16:00

Bit of a rum day at work today, the computer system went into "spite" mode for most of the day and just laughed its diodes off at me. Plus everyone is in a black mood over the office move, and the future of working from home, it's not a good place to be (wracked with indecision and rumour) but there doesn't seem a way of getting through it other than waiting for it to rumble along in its own, sweet time. Sherlock Holmes once said "Any truth is better than indefinite doubt" and that gentle readers is very true. Add to that the small issue of woodworm and a door that needed repairs where someone who could have repaired it left it to me who couldn't. I am a crumbling ruin of a man and I seem only to be able to make me crumble faster. I also need to make a decision about the future of refereeing but seem to be constantly distracted by all manner of s**te. If I were a popular referee I would be tempted to give up, but as I am not and retiring may be a popular move I am tempted to carry on. So many decisions and such a tiny brain to make them with. Anywhoo

That'll do. Home now to try to slip into cheerful mode

This is packed with inaccuracies, but it did make me laugh quite loudly. Miss you.

That's very kind Rickster, I don't doubt you for a second but it is news to me. Very happy that you laughed aloud though. That rather made my day

Off to the gym later and then to the pub. During a conversation with a chap from work who lives in that area I discovered that had I set off in the other direction and taken just ONE turn, I would have finished up on the A6 which is a road I am very familiar with. Details to follow.

I mentioned this to Tess and she remarked that it was funny but her satnav had told her to do exactly that, but so sure was she that it could not be correct she had ignored it and gone the other way.

So a woman with, even by her own account, has NO sense of direction had ignored the satnav whose only purpose is to guide the lost and the clueness, decided that she knew best.

Aye, aye, aye as the old saying goes.

Today's journey home was a cinch, easy peasy lemon squeezy
