Today I visited the club to watch young Tess bench, she has been training on a Sunday for a while and wanted to attempt a new recent pb of 60kgs.

She did single at 50, 52.5, 55, 57.5 and 60 but it wasn't to stop there. 62.5 was done and the 64. All in rather fine style. It turns out that her previous lifetime pb was 63. So happy days all round

The sample size is relatively small though.

However, Pete is not small and we trust his judgement, so I'm happy to go with his opinion on this one. Sorry, not his opinion, his SCIENCE.

I look forward to a full report of the SCIENCE at the club on Monday. I'm fairly sure it will prompt another deep and meaningful discussion!!!

Tonight's conversation revolved around fish fingers.

The pack instructions say that they should be placed in an oven at 220 degrees for 14 minutes and should be turned once half way through. The question was would make any difference if they were not turned. The consensus was that it would not. Why then do Bird's Eye recommend that they are ? After all we can probably consider them the fish finger experts.

So tonight I pre-heated the oven to 220 degrees and inserted 10 fish fingers. After 7 minutes I turned 5 and left the others. A further 7 minutes later the fish fingers were plated, loaded onto bread and eaten.

It is my considered opinion that I could not under any circumstances have told you a turned fish finger from an un-turned one.

Thank you for your attention

The turning of food in an oven is to ensure even browning, crispness as the side of the food not in contact with the oven tray gets exposed to more hot air (obviously).

This is especially important in a fan assisted oven as there is lots of air flow/circulation.

So the pertinent questions to ask:
  • Was a baking tray used or were the fish fingers placed directly on the oven rack?
  • Was the oven a fan assisted oven and if so, was the can enabled?

Fish fingers are eaten on a weekly basis, trials will continue.

The last batch were Haddock, the next will be Cod. I don't envisage that making very much difference but we shall see.

A tray lay betwween the fish fingers and the oven rack.
The oven is fan assisted
I don't know what "was the can enabled" means

However having noted the position of the "C" key relative to the "F" key I am assuming a typo and if my suspicions are correct the answer is "yes"

Is it permissible to talk about "coooooooking" rather than "cucking" in his absence ?

It should have indeed been 'fan' Mr Pete.

The reason I asked is that fan assisted ovens can be used in non-fan mode as well.

I'm a bit baffled with your results then as it's normally very easy to tell if items such as fish fingers/oven chips/chicken dippers etc have been turned during cooking in a fan assisted oven...

Not on this one to the best of my knowledge (which as you know is very limited)

It has a fan symbol and the words "fan oven" on it. I see nothing that would enable or disable it.

Maybe it is the grill/top oven that has the fan and the bottom doesn't ?

I think we need to Sherlock Holmes this a little Mr Pete.

Typically the main bottom oven would have the fan, not the top grill/oven.

It's like a photo of your oven controls or failing that (as I suspect your technical oafishness may foil us here), the make/model of it..?

I agree about the bottom oven. I was just taking a shot in the dark. Correct also on the technical oafishness.

The plot thickens.

Looking at the manual, I don't think you have the option of using the bottom oven without the fan on.

When you turn the oven on, can you hear the fan whirring?
