Friday, 9th October, start 15:40

Car washed and tyres checked.

Bench, very raw,
20 x 15
20 x 15
20 x 15
50 x 5
60 x 5
70 x 5
80 x 5
90 x 5
100 x 3
105 x 3
95 x 3
95 x 3
95 x 3
95 x 3
95 x 3
Even with Handsome Jeff's excellent hand off 105 was just too heavy and there certainly wasn't a couple more triples there today. So back down to 95 and five triples, the last of which was as hard as the first four put together. Bit of a rum day today, maybe it was the holiday and the change to the routine or maybe it was the excitement of the tyre pressures or a combination of all of them. But the drop to 95 was the right thing to do. A similar tactic worked last time I found myself in this position, so hopefully it will do again.

Only a few down tonight and there was a group discussion and we were talking about the weightlifters propensity to not squat enough (weight wise, not frequency) when I mentioned that all the weightlifters of my acquaintance who amounted to anything all had a back squat worthy of the name while those who talked the talked by when confronted by a bar of substance on a platform crumbled to dust, did not. Alan always insisted that the back squat was important and Jeff does too, when the two best coaches of the last few decades agree, people should listen

Around the time you posted this.

You were seen outside the gym before I got there. What's the story here Aaron ? Your name was on the track and trace sheet but without a time.

Who let you in ?
Who wandered off leaving you without the means to lock up ?
How did you know anyone would be there ?
Why were the lights in the gay room left on ?

So many questions Aaron, help us out here please.

It’s like the Spanish Inquisition here. I went to the gym at about 2 there were some old geezers and Gerry at the club, they left some time later I stayed until someone came.

Except without the torture.

We appreciate very much the fact that you stayed until someone came, we don't appreciate the fact that a non keyholder was left to lock up.

Now about those lights :-)

That was a courtesy for whomever turned up.

Happily lubrication was used.

As least for now

Monday, 12th October, start 16:00

Tonight I commence my "better deadlifting without deadlifting" modification to my usual routine. As my deadlift is such utter s**te I will try this for an unspecified time. Some of these exercises haven't been done this century so today I wrote out some possible predictions for weights and we will se how they go. Gently does it.

Barbell bent row
20 x 10
40 x 10
60 x 10
80 x 10

Shrug
60 x 10
80 x 10
100 x 10
120 x 10

Tbar row
20 x 10
40 x 10
60 x 10
70 x 10

Stiff legged deadlifts
60 x 5
80 x 5
100 x 5
120 x 5
Used doubleoverhand grip for these but the top set was slipping and only just held on. Mixed grip seems like a better option

Good mornings
60 x 5
60 x 5
80 x 5
100 x 5
110 x 5
This is the only one that didn't go as predicted. 120 would have been a shade too much so 110 was a much better bet. I also had to do a second set with 60 as one just wasn't enough, the second was much better

Enjoyed this tonight, good fun and reasonably hard. Interesting to see what aches tomorrow or Wednesday

No aches as yet, but one thing I failed to report was that last night one of the weightlifters put one of the heaters on. In fairness it was just the one heater and it was just for the one cycle. But it was the first time for a long time

Wednesday, 14th October

Sometimes life gets in the way rather and tonight was one such time.

To quote Franky Four Fingers in the film Snatch "I have fish to fry, stones to sell and many different men to see about many different dogs"

Nothing exciting or any cause for concern but there was no training tonight. After reading Rick's entry in his log, I might, emphasis on might, have done myself a small favour.

We'll see.

I think the sheer difficulty, in so many ways, of my working life, and of course the general disruption and upset to the rest of my life, just got to me, and I needed a few days of good food, good company, and rest. Teachers are traditionally fraying at the edges by this time of year anyway, and everything is so very hard at the moment.

I know you are finding your mode of work very difficult and wearing too, and you need to make allowances for its effects, and forgive yourself for feeling them. It's hard.

I'm almost glad powerlifting is on pause. Between that (refereeing and the NW exec), my union commitments, chairing the common room at work, and moderating this thing, I am doing far too much volunteer work. At least one is going to have to go.

I've booked a couple of VERY good restaurants that I've never been to for half term, with every expectation I shan't be able to go due to a national circuit breaker. And I'm going to make the most of time at the club while we're still in tier 2 and allowed to. Hashtag tiers of a clown...

I miss you.

And I you old boy. Being allowed back to the gym was the best thing that happened to me this year, I applaud your dedication to training at the time you do.

I couldn't be arsed with refereeing with all this going on, and yet strangely, if ever I feel hard done to I feel like I shouldn't as I do have it so much easier than so many others.

It is, as I have mentioned before, a funny old world. And one I fear that will never be the same again

Hopefully we'll keep what's good and ditch what's not, but it's hard to overestimate our capacity as a culture for doing the opposite over the last forty years.

Training at seven suits me, and my sessions are brief. I often see Mac's team, and sometimes Glynn and Turner, so there's a social side too.
