Billytheold said:Do you wear a suit and tie at work? I see business men at times, also some church goers in the sun with a suit and tie sweating up a storm. May do people think that it is a status symbol to wear ties?I had to for 30 odd years and I have the neck marks as a reminder.

I used to, but times change. But up until fifteen to twenty years back office workers were expected to wear a collar and tie, and "proper" trousers, that is to say not cords nor jeans. Jackets were never insisted on, and older workers tended to wear them whereas younger ones tended not to. I never did.

First to go was the collar and tie and what a happy day that was. Polo shirts were allowed, that is a causal shirt which a collar but without a tie. About ten years back "dress down Friday" was introduced where basically jeans were allowed, then maybe five years back this was extended to all working days.

So basically - collars and ties and suits can be worn but don't have to be. Jeans and polo shirts and other casual trousers (in good order, no rips or tears) are allowed, though if you have a visitor from another company a collar and tie are expected and jeans would be frowned upon, but the next day, when the visitor has gone, it's back to casual.

The only things that are forbidden are trainers, t shirts, and vests. Of causal shirts with a collar, the only forbidden ones are replica football tops.

The rules are also far more rigidly enforced with men than they are with women. While no-one really disagrees with this it can't help but get noticed.

In fact, funerals and weddings aside, refereeing is the last collar and tie activity.

Maybe it's time they changed.

Now that I have given into the wearing a tie for the occasion of refereeing at a National comp, the question remains as whether or not to go back to illegal "casual" dress for regionals or whether to stick with the official legal "smart" attire.

I have been in something of a dilemma over this, I know Rick's view on this, and I know Handsome Jeff's. They both go down the tie route and between them they almost swung it.

It was however a conversation with Handsome Jeff that reminded me of something Alan used to say, it was along the lines of "When you go to competition you need to be a bit professional" I never argued with Alan when he was alive, so I ain't going to start now.

Decision made.

I said:
Swung by the car wash as is the Sunday norm and as they started the jet wash the handle stayed in his hand and the barrel shot off and smashed the rear tali light. They were very apologetic and have offered to pay but it still means I have to schlep off to Rochdale sometime to sort it.

Back to the car wash place where they paid up without a word of complaint. Always a pleasure to deal with gentlemen. Of course they will have all the money back in less than a year, so it's a loan really. But they said they would pay and they did, so my hat is off to them.

Monday, 1st July, start 16:15

Bench, very raw, squat boots on
20 x 15
20 x 15
20 x 15
50 x 5
60 x 5
70 x 5
80 x 5
85 x 5
90 x 5
95 x 5
The empty bar aside all these had the last one paused, and all were really rather easy.
The shoulder feels much more relaxed than last week

Close grip
60 x 8
60 x 8
70 x 8
70 x 8
80 x 8
80 x 8
These were easier than last week as well, a rise in the weight is due.

Young Mack did a very fine 147.5 snatch which is an all time club record. Well done that man. It was a pleasure to watch

Wednesday, 03rd July, start 16:15

Very warm again, squat, boots and sleeves and singlet
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
60 x 5
80 x 3
belt on
100 x 2
120 x 2
140 x 2
150 x 2
150 x 2
150 x 2
150 x 2
150 x 2

Very odd tonight, up to and including the 80 all was as you would expect but from there on in things got strange, very creaky and clunky and everything felt awkward once 150 arrived it was quite clear that there was going to be nothing heavier than that tonight so five sets at that and offski.

On the plus side I had the good sense to realize that something was amiss, also to write it off as a bad night at 150. On the bad side, it was rather a shame that I had to to this. I have no idea what was amiss and am very tempted to call it one of those things, hopefully back to normal, or at least something like it next time.

I have every hope to do just that. Age is a terrible thing but it is denied to many so we should appreciate it. The young cannot comprehend what a difference it makes, but they will find out one day.

When young you can tell your body what to do, when old it starts to tell you. The wisdom lies in accepting the fact that argument is futile, so you listen, listen to every word and act accordingly.

Bench, very raw, squat boots
20 x 15
20 x 15
50 x 5
60 x 5
70 x 3
80 x 3
85 x 3
90 x 3
95 x 3
100 x 3
All these were paused and all fairly easy

Close grip
60 x 10
70 x 10
80 x 10
90 x 10
These got progressively harder and the last set was difficult, never in doubt but difficult, the extra two reps makes a considerable difference.

Young Mack improved the club snatch record, which he only set last week, with a hugely impressive 150 kilos. Well done that man

Wednesday, 10th July, start 16:00

Very hot.

Actually that should be arrived 16:00 and start at 16:30, I was very lethargic at first and it took a while to rouse myself.

Deadlift, slippers on, no belt
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
100 x 3
120 x 3
140 x 3
160 x 3
180 x 5
190 x 4
200 x 3
210 x 2
220 x 1
180 x 1
The 180, 190, 200 and 210 were all really rather easy. the 220 however was a shock. It flew to the knees and then stopped, I stood shaking like a s**tting dog for a good few seconds and desperately wanted to put it back down, when suddenly it started to move again and was finished very quickly. No hurry to put it down but I have really no idea why this one lift was harder than all the other lifts I did tonight put together. Just a single at 180 just so I didn't finish on such a s**t lift. 180 for five could have been done but it might just have killed me. A single was the right thing to do. That 220 ruined what had been up to then a good night.

Wise words Pete, and in my experience most people through lifestyle choice, work commitments, family etc, will give up long before they hit this fork in the road. And will forever bask in the their glory years, without ever knowing the frustration that lay just over the hill.

I can now count in one hand the amount of people who regularly and actively lift from the hundreds who have came and went and who at some point or another were a big part of a small moment of time of my life.
For me the train will keep a rollin, just a little slower year on year.
