Many adjectives have comparative and superlative forms e.g. mild has milder and mildest. However, many adjectives do not e.g. beautiful, so in this instance you would use more beautiful or most beautiful. "Beautifuler' and 'beautifulest' cannot be used (obviously).
In the examples above, I would say use milder instead of more mild, but use more beautiful instead of anything else because there is no other option.
I never really knew about this sort of thing until I had to start teaching it to ten-year-olds.

Thank you Jon, I appreciate that.

I don't doubt for a second what you say about "beautiful". I was once told that "er" could not be added to the end of anything with three syllables or more. Of course there would be the occasional exception (isn't there always) but that was a rule of thumb.

The question is though why can we not say "beautifuller". Other than it sounds odd and that we are told not to, is there an actual reason for it ?

If Susie Dent has taught me anything it is that if enough people say it for long enough then it becomes correct and acceptable.

You are handsomer than I, that may be frowned upon but no-one would mis-understand. (Nor would they disagree)

Many people here buy dogs and do not realize the work that has to be put into the safe and happy ownership of a dog/pet. The owner then becomes bored irritated when the pet needs attention. That’s where people like me come into play feeling sorry for the pet and so the story goes. How many people per hundred over your way are pet owners?

45 percent of the UK have pets and 26 percent have dogs (research courtesy of Google)

My brother has dogs, always has, but he will put the work in. Personally I have no pets and don't want want any. I spend too much time out of the house for most and I am far too lazy to look after them properly.

Wednesday, 6th February, start 16:15

Deadlift, sleeves and squat boots on.

Last time was a comfortable 220 triple so I am aiming for 230 tonight so I have rejigged the initial sets

60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
100 x 3
140 x 3
170 x 3
190 x 3
210 x 3
belt on
230 x 1
180 x 3
I omitted the 120 and went straight to 140 from 100 and made the 160 a 170 so that I could go up in twenties to 230.

It doesn't take an Einstein to realize that no-one in their right mind puts a belt on for the very last set. Had this been a belt day it should have gone on earlier and if it wasn't a belt day it shouldn't have gone on at all.

It isn't easy to control one's thoughts and I never gave the belt a thought until after the rather splendid 210 triple. I must have started fretting and worrying otherwise I would have just have carried on without. But instead I put it on. The 230 was a difficult and technically poor lift but I managed it. The bar got away from me and it was clear that there wasn't two more there.

The belt didn't make a happ'orth of physical difference but it was an indicator that my mind wasn't right. So I dropped it to 180 and did a rather easy triple (none of those got away from me) and called it a day. The knees are still happy which is a good thing. The intention is to try this again in a fortnight, during which time I shall ponder if the amended road up to 230 was a factor and whether I should do this again or revert to something more "normal"

Went to my friends house to lift weights. I forgot my belt we went to do squats. He kept on insisting that I use his belt but I didn’t. Do you think if you do not wear a belt that your belly will becone larger and back bowed troll like without using a belt with heavy lifts over decades?

I think that if from day one you went beltless, you would become accustomed to it and it would have no detrimental effects whatsoever.

Once you have tried a belt though, there will always be the temptation to go back to it or the change will make a difference.

The biggest squat I ever did, albeit in a suit, was beltless. In fact all my biggest suited squats were beltless

You/re very welcome.

I didn't think you would know, I would wager that there are very few people who do know. Indeed I am not even sure if there is anything to know, it may just be that we always do that and there isn't a reason.

I recall a friend tell me some years back that he was staying in a hotel in Germany, the owner's daughter was struggling with her English homework which consisted of twenty sentences with a word missing from each. That word was either "high" or "tall". Ever helpful my mate rattled off which word was needed in each sentence.

The girl thanked him but explained that she did not want the answers, she wanted the method he had applied to answer them all so quickly. Of course, that was the one thing that he did not know himself. He just knew.

Friday, 8th February, start 16:30

Tbar row, kilos for a change
20 x 10
30 x 10
40 x 10
50 x 10
60 x 10
70 x 10
70 x 10
70 x 10
70 x 10
70 x 10

Seventy kilos is 154 pounds and when I do these in imperial I work up to 150 but these, strangely felt lighter. I have no idea why

Pulldown to chest, narrow grip
50 x 10
55 x 10
60 x 10
65 x 10
70 x 10
70 x 10
70 x 10
Oh I really don't like these narrow grips so that will do.

Rather cold again tonight and not very many down either but there you go, a few is better than none. Tesco on the way home and I have a small adventure planned for tomorrow, those nice fellows who sold me my car just under twenty months back have invited me to a tete a tete because they have "significant reductions across the whole range" Now I like the sound of that, maybe it is a pre-brexit sale, maybe they have targets to hit and are close or maybe they just made too many. But I have no objection to drinking free coffee and talking nonsense.
I will have in my pocket a small card on which there will be two figures, beat the lower figure and we have a deal, fail to beat the higher figure and I will shake his hand, thank him for his time and head for the door, but between the two figures I will have a decision to make. I will tell him of the card at the outset but he will not get to see it until the dust has settled. People really should not invite me to places. I have been told before that I am pretty far from their usual type of customer. But I have bought my last two cars there so they should know exactly what they are getting into.

Sorry about that but yesterday was a long day and I never got around to getting on here.

It was quite eventful, I looked up what it cost me last time and decided that about a grand more than that would be about right as the base models have been "improved" and therefore are more costly and the trade in was a diesel which although lovely have been demonized and that is not good for resale. Plus last time's trade in was a surprisingly good deal.

I informed the salesman of my two figures and he asked to see them and I declined for obvious reasons. He asked what spec I wanted then took a look at mine and then the opening shot was fired. It was three grand higher than my walk away price. I did my best to look horrified, it wasn't difficult.

There followed some rather good natured banter him saying how difficult it would be to improve on that price and me on how I was there by their invitation and of the talk of "significant" saving and all manner of other goodies. After twenty minutes of such nonsense he wandered off once more and returned with a figure two and a half grand less than the first one, but still five hundred over my walk away price.

I thanked him for the improvement and indicated pleasure on the way things were progressing but that again the invitation, the implication of deals that could not be refused and that I was a regular customer plus that I could manage quite nicely with a VW up but would much prefer a Mini. I told him of the value of a clear conscience and how driving me back into the arms of VW would sadden me and get between him and his sleep and that neither of us wanted that. He nodded and awayed once more.

This time he returned with another grand off and a price exactly half way between my walk away and my accept immediately. I thanked him and requested another coffee and pondered as I drank. It was a complex arrangement of money coming from all angles, this much from he finance company, that much from Mini, this much from under the floorboards etc etc. I now had a figure exactly one hundred pounds less than what I had thought we would get to as I drove up there. I also decided that asking the man to take another trip to the well with this particular bucket would be taking the piss rather. I had no wish to do that. It had taken a couple of hours, but it seemed like less and it had been fun.

So it was now or never, this was the moment of truth. I offered my hand and he took it. There was some signing of papers and I left happy. He didn't seem in any way displeased either. So, things that stood me in good stead - You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, never burn a bridge as you never know when you will need to cross it again, and never raise your voice. This company do rather pride themselves on their reputation and deservedly so they are excellent people who give a very good service, I like companies that do that.

Went for some dinner today and parked on the club car park as usual. Glynn and Turner were there and after a short time one Joseph Horatio Bullock, fat man of this parish rolled up. He is back he informed us and should be training regularly on Sundays and Wednesdays.

Time will tell but hopes are high

The very days I don't train. Perhaps I should reconsider, but my Sundays are oft-deranged by events.

Bench. Very raw, squat boots on, no refereeing yesterday
20 x 20
20 x 20
20 x 20
50 x 8
60 x 8
70 x 8
80 x 8
90 x 8
90 x 8
100 x 8
102 x 6
100 x 6
Must better than last week but not so good as I would have liked or would have expected. The first 100 was riproaringly easy, so much so that I progressed to 102, things got rather disappointing from there, should have left it at 100. Ah well, I live and learn

Tricep pushdown, very strict
40 x 10
50 x 10
60 x 10
70 x 10
75 x 10
75 x 10
75 x 10
75 x 10
75 x 10
That will do for tonight, I may just put my thinking cap on for these benches, something different may just be good for me.

Must better than last week but not so good as I would have licked or would have expected. Just one letter added was what I saw the first time I read it. Reread immediately and said oh how weird! Who is goat man? Why haven’t you spoke of him lately?
