Justin Graalf, 1102lbs at 110kg, three whites. Which is great and all, but just a little bit on the high side:

Apparently the man himself said afterward he thought it was high, but (someone who said he was) one of the judges from the day showed up on powerliftingwatch and continued to claim it was a good squat. Others said it was "only an inch" high.

From that angle, I'm not even convinced the *bottom* of his leg at the hip broke the top of the knee.

Looks miles high from that angle, but the camera isn't always the best judge of depth. It can be very deceiving.

It's well high. There's no chance whatsoever that would have passed in IPF.

Am I correct in thinking that the rules for depth in squat are actually more or less the same in all the feds, it's just that the judges give anything in APF/WPO etc. anyway?

The wording of the rules is identical.

That's what I thought. It's ridiculous that there's such a wide disparity in the judging - which is obviously just so that they can have heavier weights lifted. It's quite pathetic really.

its down to how ref's interperet the rules isnt it? thats how cross federation differences arise?

Yes - but ultimately it's a matter of policy within the federation. The American multi-ply feds tend to allow very high squats because people (particularly Americans) like to see big numbers no matter how the lifts are performed.

At the risk of getting into a federation bashing exercise Im going to say " Is that really a squat?" no matter what the camera angle it was nowhere near deep enough. It would be interesting to see how strong some of these guys are when they have to do a "proper" squat? I bet that extra 6 inchs of depth robs you of many pounds!
