This post is for any new guys who want to enter a comp or who are nervous or a little bit aprehensive.

I am writing this as when i entered the Cheshire Strongest man first timers (open class) i didnt have a clue as to what to expect from the competitors or from the competition itself.

When i arrived all i remember is my missis telling me "we can go home if you want" as 90% of the lads were well over 100kg and little old me at 84kg.

I thought f**k that lets see what level i am at compared as only a competition will tell me where i stand and if i can compete with the big lads that will help my confidence.

Firstly everyone that competed regardless of gym experience etc were so friendly and offered advice on some the events i had never tried.

There were six events i did as follows:

Farmers walk 20 metres 90kg - 9.20 secs (i wanted under 10 secs and felt i did ok at this compared to competition)

240kg Yolk 20 meteres - I had never tried a yolk before and did not finish this, i gotta say that never go into a comp where you have not tried the equipment as this was so hard for me i think im 2 inches smaller now :-).

85kg Log Press - Again i had only been practising with a barbell, i did not get any reps out as for this which was the same for the majority of the competition. Again only a log would get you prepared for this.

190kg Axle deadlift - Banged out 8 of these which i was happy with and probably in the top half for this event.

300kg+ Tyre flip in a min - I was confident of my cardio for this event but had no idea about the weight as i had only been using 200kg tyre. I came joint second at this with 14 flips pretty happy with this.

80kg Stones for reps - I had never lifted an atlas stone in my life so was really wary as they were warning about bicep tears even with this light weight. I managed 14 reps for this and again was pretty happy.

Overall i loved the whole day, you cant match what you do in the gym as to when you are competing. With the crowd there it just pushed me and all the competitors to better levels. Even though there were only 2 others similar weight to myself out of 30 i feel that i performed well at the events i could practise.

My advice to anyone looking to compete for the first time is try not to go to a competition without trying the events. I will never forget my first yolk experience in a hurry :-(

This post is just for anyone that is looking to compete for the first time, I thought it was a great day with a bunch of great lads and well ran where advice was always there.

I will now look to compete a journal on here as i want to enter 4 events next year and i hope theres a few more under 90kg competitions available so i dont look like the water boy when i turn up.

Cheers

i was one of them other small people! Tongue

i entered the comp very late notice so had been training hard far to close to the day to be 100% on the day and had no event prep so i just put no pressure on myself especially as it was open weight.

Thought the yoke was 220kg, if it was 240kg then no wonder i had such a hard time moving it!

i came 25th/34 competitors on the day which i was happy enough with, how did you do? judging by that write up im guessing about 15th?

Hey,

I think they bumped it up to 240kg on the day, i dont think 220 would of made a differnce though lol... i found it sooo hard.

I came 21st i think. Loved it though.

20kg can make a huge difference if it is rite on the edge of your standard, like i could probably go to the gym later and equal my squat pb but doult i could put 20kg on my pb in one sesh.

im doing the Dragons under 90kg comp start of september next Happy

Hey,

Thanks just thought i post this up as there wasnt much on here before about first timers stuff so just thought i give a little insight.

Im looking at competing early next year now and going to ministry of muscle for a few sessions to help me improve as im sure there plenty of quality guys there.

As for the tyre flips and stones i think im ok at the cardio based events as i come from a boxing background however the static events prove more difficult (squats etc).

Really want to improve to get to good standard for under 90kg even though there are some beasts out there at present.

Either way i would say just compete as much as you can as the competitors, crowd and excitement from the whole comp was well worth it.

However rushing back to London to watch david haye fight wasnt worth it the useless c*** :-)
