Many thanks Peter. Last summer I was struggling to double 150, which makes me appreciate recent lifts all the more. You never know when you'll start going backwards at our age, so forward movement, however slight, is still a thing of joy.

Wednesday Deadlifts

Purely in the interests of completeness...

60 for 5 x 2 sets
100 for 3
140 for 1
Finish.

Legs weak through inactivity, back stiff and sore, abs too prominent, the kind of session I'll hopefully look back on in a few months as the low I have climbed from. Not a lot more to say.

Donnie fought and won some good battles tonight, but also discovered that running the day before a squat and deadlift session is not conducive to optimum performance. And Julie, only second session back after a two month layoff with injury, squatted to within 2.5 Kg of her 1RM. She'll be hurting tomorrow. And tomorrow, numbers permitting, I hope to do the shirt work I was unable to do on Monday.

In other news, my new lifting briefs...

Splendid, don't you think...?

Thursday Bench

Five of us tonight, good training vibe, shirt night for me.

Warm Up (every warm up set done on a single breath)

Bar for 20
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 6
100 for 4
120 for 3
140 for 2
160 for 1

Rage X on

182.5 for 2 - 4 inches, then 2 inches
200 for 1 - yessss! Equals my pb. Happy Vid to follow
210 to 6 inches - fail, CNS fried

Shirt off

140 for 6
120 for 10
100 for 15
Finish.

Very happy with that little lot. It's been a long, long time since I did a 200, there were times when I wondered if I'd ever do it again, and to get that volume in afterwards is very pleasing as well. And great to refer to 160 as a 'warm up' - it's only the Scottish M2 record!

Elsewhere, Scott fought brillisntly with his 5s, Donnie and Frank both pbed AFTER their five sets of 5, and Alanna did fantastically well in only her second ever session. Lovely girl, huge potential if she sticks at it.

6 weeks out from the Scottish Bench, and only another 3 kilos to find - and the shirt can go much, much lower! Good times...

Probably the former - I always thought 207 might be doable, but a raw 175 seemed beyond my limit until very recently. Maybe it is...? But that's your answer. Happy And thanks JR. Happy

Monday Bench

It's a funny old game, this iron game. Had a restful weekend, a proper meal at lunchtime, got home early, carbed up, energised, and raring to go.

40 fro 10
60 for 8
90 for 6
110 for 4
130 for 3
152.5 for 2 - easy, both reps without breathing out
172.5 - fail - abject, total.
175.5 - fail - worse than the previous one

Thin blue band on and

137.5 for 2
137.5 for 2
137.5 for 2

Band off

130 for 6
100 for 15
Finish.

Worst session for ages off the best pre-workout prep in weeks. Breezed 171 last time, an extra 1.5 killed me. The 137s should have been 3s, the 130 should have been 8 or more, the 100 should have been 18. The right arm let me down a bit tonight. All I can think is that maybe I hadn't fully recovered from last week. As I said, it's a funny old game...

The other 5 all performed splendidly. Alanna and Frank battled through their reps brilliantly, Ross put in an appearance and had lost nothing for missing 4 weeks (jealous as hell...), Donnie got yet another pb and is edging ever closer to the magic 100. But pride of place tonight goes to Heather - quite simply her best ever session, at last all the hard work is bearing fruit, finally broke through the barrier she's been stuck on for weeks and weeks, then raised her pb again the very next set and absolutely blitzed her volume sets.

In a nutshell, five great performances..., and me. We go again Thursday, red band night, I'll be trying to smash the reps. But going to stay away from heavy singles for the next month, get the reps in.

Thursday Bench

5 of us tonight, the usual good craic. As per Monday, I felt up for it but not quite flying like I have been recently. The right arm was hurting tonight more than it has for several weeks, and that contributed to me going off the boil a wee bit. Numbers still not bad, just not as good as the last couple of weeks have been.

Bar for 20
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 6
100 for 4
115 for 3
135 for 3
155 for 3 - just, vid to follow

Red band on

130 for 3 - first 2 good, 3rd a grind
130 for 3 - as above
130 for 2 - 2 good reps, right arm let me down badly on the third

Band off

100 for 15 - more there, but arm not keen, no point in risking injury for an extra rep with 100.

Finish.

The good news it that it's not a lack of strength, just the bloody arm - think the 172.5 attempt on Monday strained it a tad. The 152.5 double on Monday was so easy that I actually had 4 with 155 in mind, but not to be. Still only 2.5 off my best ever triple.

The others all lifted splendidly. Frank got a 1RM pb - he's improved his pb by 33.3% since starting with us at Christmas. Phenomenal! Donnie got a doubles pb, Heather repped like a machine and got 5 x 5 with a weight she couldn't do a few weeks ago, and Scott got his progression set and more on 8s. All in all, another good night in the Garage of Power!

We go again Monday - 120s for 3 with the thick blue band for me, right arm permitting...

Monday Bench

Not feeling 100% tonight, there's a nasty bug about up here so maybe I'm about to get it, maybe just psychosomatic. Let's see how it goes, me, Donnie, Frank and Heather training tonight.

Bar for 20
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 6
110 for 3
130 for 3
150 for 3

Thick blue band on

120 for 3
120 for 3
120 for 3

On all three sets, first two easy enough, third an all out grind.

Band off

100 for 16
Finish.

Got my top sets, even though the right arm continues to hurt, plenty more there if I can get rid of the pain. Had 150 for 5 in mind, but the arm hurt so much on the third rep that I left it there. No fires set alight, but all in all can't be too disappointed with that.

Talking of fires, Heather was positively ablaze tonight. She got a 50 bench for the first time ever and then, just to prove it wasn't a fluke, we made her do it again - and she did it. And then followed it up with 40 for 8 and 45 for 3 x 2. Her best ever session, well done Happy. Donnie hit all five sets of five, and Frank fought his heart out and ended up one rep short. But the ability and preparedness to fight is half the battle anyway. Some very determined new powerlifters making superb progress. 16 weeks ago, Donnie's 1RM was 62.5. Now his 1RM is 95, and after the main work tonight he did 60 x 16. That's what you call progress!

Me? I just want this bloody arm to stop hurting, and hope the bug passes me by. Thursday, if I can train, I test my 1RM with the three different bands. My goals are 140 with thick blue, 150 with red and 160 with thin blue. Let's see how far off I am...
