Thanks Bill. I'm at home (shhh...) because of the Covid restrictions and the worry they will get worse.

I finished work slightly earlier tonight, and looking at the timetable, I don't know when I'll next get the chance to train, so thought I'd try and squeeze in a volume bench session.

Not only am I training later than normal, but I'm getting up earlier than normal, and after a mentally exhausting day.

I had no great expectations, I would have been happy with 90 x 10 just to keep things ticking over.

Bench
Bar for 10 x 3 sets
60 for 10
70 for 10
80 for 10
90 for 15
80 for 16
70 for 18
60 for 20
Finish.

Only 2 short of my 90s best, late, tired and under-fuelled, so absolutely delighted both that I had the mental fortitude to train at all and with the numbers. Now I'm very tired, ready for bed, need a shower, haven't had my roast dinner yet and think I'd waste it if I had it now. Maybe I should go down the sandwich route and dine splendidly tomorrow?

An evening off, so an opportunity to get on the bench.

Bar for 10 x 3 sets
60 for 6
80 for 4
100 for 3
120 for 2
130 for 2
120 for 4
110 for 6
100 for 8
Finish.

The 120 x 2 was a bit creaky, so I stayed away from 140. It was only meant to keep things ticking over, and it certainly did, in spite of being mentally exhausted and insufficiently fuelled. Hopefully I'll get another one in before the end of the week, then back to normal on Monday.

First session back since the commentary stint finished. I've entered the British Equipped Bench today, so the next month's training will be equipped oriented.

Bench
Bar for 10 x 3 sets
Green band on (adds about 40 at lockout)
40 for 6
60 for 5
70 for 4
80 for 3
90 for 2
100 for 1
110 for 1
100 for 2
95 for 3
90 for 4
85 for 5
80 for 6
Finish

Pleased with that, hit all my targets. 110 wasn't quite at my limit. My best with this band is 120, so the target is to get back to that over the next four weeks. Every session will either be with this band, which I think best approximates the shirt, or in a shirt, apart from my usual volume session on a Saturday.

The other good news is that the feeling of lethargy, which I had had for months, seems to have gone.

Did quite a bit of running around today (the figurative type). Got home 3.45 and by the time I'd eaten and digested it, it was 5 and I really didn't fancy it. Didn't stop me, though.

Green Band (adds about 40 at lockout) Bench

Bar for 10 x 3 sets
42.5 for 6
62.5 for 5
72.5 for 4
82.5 for 3
92.5 for 2
102.5 for 1
112.5 for 1
102.5 for 2
97.5 for 3
92.5 for 4
87.5 for 5
82.5 for 6
Finish.

Same workout as last time, with 2.5 added. I put 1.25s on first and then tried to pretend they weren't there. The tricks we play on ourselves to get stuff done. Worked though...

After the day I had yesterday, and this morning, I was seriously tempted to give today's session a miss. That's where upcoming competitions come in handy (whether we'll still be travelling around the country by then is another matter, of course).

Volume Bench

Bar for 10 x 3 sets
60 for 10
70 for 10
80 for 10
90 for 15
80 for 16
70 for 20
Finish

I made a deal with myself mid-set on the last set that if I could squeeze out 20 I wouldn't have to do a set with 60. So I squeezed out 20 and left it there.

Green Band Bench (Again) - adds 40ish at lockout

Bar for 10 x 3 sets
Band on, plus 2.5s either side to force me to do more
45 for 6
65 for 5
75 for 4
85 for 3
95 for 2
105 for 1
115 for 1 - just
105 for 2
100 for 2"
95 for 3**
90 for 5
Finish.

*I got the left side into the rack after the third rep, but couldn't lock out the right arm, so can only claim 2
** I could probably have done 4, but lacking confidence after the previous set.

I managed to squeeze out 5 with 90, but it took everything, so I left it there. That was tough. Not sure there'll be another 2.5 there on Thursday - one way to find out...

Black Band Bench - adds about 70 at lockout

Decided that I probably couldn't go any higher with the green band, so got out the monster band instead

Bar for 10 x 3 sets
Band on
40 for 6
50 for 5
60 for 4
70 for 3
80 for 2
90 for 1
100 for 1
90 for 2
85 for 3
80 for 4
75 for 5
70 for 6
Finish.

Brutal!! Struggled for motivation to get out there, but once I made it to the garage I got it done. Black band again on Monday. There's definitely another 2.5 there on the top single, maybe even 5. But not so confident there's much more there on the down sets.

It's Saturday, so whatever else it is, it's volume bench day.

Bar for 10 x 3 sets
60 for 10
70 for 10
80 for 10
90 for 15
70 for 20
Finish.

Slightly truncated, I missed out the 80 down set, and as I got 20 with 70, missed out the 60 down set as well. A small concession to the day's other priorities.

Monday Bench

Losing track of the days at this time of year, but it's Monday, so it's bench day. I decided to take a break from band work, partly out of curiosity to see if 140 was still there.

Bar for 10 x 3 sets
60 for 8
80 for 6
100 for 4
120 for 2
140 for 1
130 for 3
120 for 5
110 for 7
100 for 10
Finish.

140 was easy, decent pause and no out breath, last rep with 130 nearly had me, 120s were easier than I expected, I did a deal with myself that if I could do 110 x 8 I would finish there, but I couldn't and so did 100 x 10 as well. Not a bad session at all, given the time of year and all the distractions.

Increased the warm up reps too. All good.

Last bench session of a strange year. Using the black band, which adds somewhere between 60 and 70 at lockout and is a fearsome beast. The first set nearly kills you, and then it gets progressively harder. Once again, I added 1.25 plates before loading the bigger weights, and then tried to forget they were there.

Bar for 10 x 3 sets
Band on
42.5 for 6
52.5 for 5
62.5 for 4
72.5 for 3
82.5 for 2
92.5 for 1
102.5 for 1 (surprisingly easy)
92.5 for 2 (surprisingly hard)
87.5 for 3
82.5 for 3
Finish.

I intended to do 82.5 x 4, and then sets of 5 and 6 reps, but after the third rep with 82.5 I knew I was done. You get to know after all these years. Done for the day, and done for the year. A year I finished with an easy raw 140, and a reasonably easy 102.5 plus the black band. And that will have to do... It's not where I want to be, but it's better than all but a couple of people my age in the UK, both in heavier bodyweight classes.

Monday Bench

It is Monday, right...?

Not the best conditions, but hard core for sure. Hail crashing on the roof, flooded floor, freezing cold, bar almost welding to the hands the first few sets. Back to the green band, which adds about 40 at lockout.

Bar for 10 x 3 sets
Band on
40 for 6
60 for 5
70 for 4
80 for 3
90 for 2
100 for 1
110 for 1
117.5 for 1
100 for 3
90 for 5
80 for 8
Finish

I had a crazy lapse in concentration as I unracked the top single. "This would be quite heavy even without the band," was my idiotic thought, and it nearly cost me dear. Otherwise, delighted to report that I sailed through the session. I had reached my limit at 115 on the last green band session, so the sessions I've done since with the black band have clearly worked.

On Saturday, I aborted my volume session after the final warm up - chronic lack of energy, something not right, as was the case last Thursday when I finished sooner than intended for the same reason. In the previous four nights, I slept 12, 11, 10, 10 hours and felt exhausted each day. Last night, I made do with 8 hours and felt better in myself as I readied myself. A big relief! It may be diabetes related with the festive season diet, but seems to be OK now.

Thursday Bench - Back Band

Another too long sleep, followed by an afternoon glued to the chair, it took all the willpower I could muster to get me to the garage. Under the hoodie was a sweatshirt and a tee shirt, but it definitely wasn't as cold as Monday. Band adds about 70 at lockout. I added 2.5s first, and then tried to forget they were there.

Bar for 10 x 3 sets
Band on
45 for 6
55 for 5
65 for 4
75 for 3
85 for 2
95 for 1
105 - fail
85 for 2
75 for 5
65 for 8
Finish

I suspected, after the 95, that there wasn't another 10 there, but gave it a go anyway. I think it dented my confidence on the 85 down set, but I got it together for the last two sets. You can only do what you can do, and today I did what I could do. Roll on warmer, drier days, when I might be able to do even more...

Hope so Ian. Happy

I didn't train yesterday, felt lethargic all day, and today was also spent mostly on the chair watching football matches I had no real investment in. Even fell asleep towards the end of the Arsenal match and missed the winning goal. Decided to drag myself to the garage on the basis that something is better than nothing. Not that cold, so the long rests between sets didn't hurt too much.

Volume Bench
Bar for 10 x 3 sets
60 for 10
70 for 10
80 for 10
90 for 14
80 for 16
70 for 18
60 for 20
Finish

14 with 90 is poor in many ways, but only one short of what I've done the last two weeks, so I'll take it in the circumstances.

Hope to put on a loose shirt tomorrow, more to see what I need to get a touch than anything else.
