Ok fellas before I start this thread off I just want to say that constructive discussion is welcome but will people who just want to argue please for Cleggys sake do not bother joining in ..

I've been following the American strongman scene now for some time and they are much more professionally set-up than us . No question . And they have a u75kg Cat to go with u90kg, u105kg and u120kg ..

So I'm running the first under 80kg Strongman comp next week for some good lads .. We have a nice couple of sponsors and a tasty £250 prize for the Winner ..

This comp without doubt will be an enjoyable day out for all involved - providing it doesn't rain :-)

My plan was to see if this comp was successful then run the first Englands Strongest u75kg next year .. I very nearly cancelled this conp once because of lack of interest but alot of People are adamant that they want a under 75kg class ..

I'm unsure if it's a step to far or not .. I'm opening it up the the intelligent people of SB to see how the future should look .

i would say u75 is prehaps a step too far

but on the other hand, if people want to have a go at it then fair enough

the problems come when you have 4 guys turn up and the winner is uk/britains strongest man without much real competition, competition and titles then become too diluted, like powerlifting is

I would cancel the comp if I have less than 15 anyway Carl .. I have a strategy .. I would design the comp to suit the Strongest U75kg lads around also so it wouldn't be CrossFit .

I just think 1 under 75kg comp a year .. Are these little f**kers hurting anyone by doing it ?

In all seriousness its worth a try i think many smaller guys are hesitant to join the U90 scene i kno i was due to tbe complete beasts that enter it i kno its the taking part that counts and having fun but i think if a lighter cat was introduced whos it gunna hurt if mr clegg is kind enough to consider running a U75 i for one would love to compete (if i made the cut) and if theres lack of interest cancel it not like anything has been lost

I can't see any harm in it TBH.

I believe the yanks have lots of weight category comps in the same show, with a winner of each category, as well as an overall winner of the 'lightweights' (U75's, U90's and U105's) and 'heavies' (U120's and opens). So you end up with a LW champ and a HW champ. It gives guys more competition to each of the guys to make an overall exciting show. Must be very motivating for a 75kg guy to kick a 90, or 105kg guy's arse...

On the other hand, I can also see how some might think this 'dilutes' the overall show...

Go for it Mark. Some people might not like it. f**k them.

The standard of u90 shows that the smaller guys can impress just as much. Why not have some u75s as well.

I think this is key really.

Also it would be difficult to try and attract enough athletes as i imagine the pool of lads who could/ would want to get under 75Kg is pretty small.

I don't have a problem with it, but I'd question if there's a need/demand for it.

there will be a few doubter regarding all the weight catergories but for me if you get the numbers then why not.

weightlifting and power lifting have them why not Strongman its a sport thats growing and growing from what it was

Good idea, cant see a problem with increasing the variety of strongmen, u75 will be great for the shorter athletes or just the naturally leaner guys who want to have a crack at the game without giving away 15kg in bodyweight !

I'm not really sure comparisons to America work well because the sheer size of the country means they can find enough people to flesh out competitions. We're much smaller, it's going to be harder to find enough people for more niche weight classes.

Agreed. To allow people to enter a sport without feeling that they need to be 6 ft 5 and 20 stone just to even bother turning up up is surely a good thing.

More so than any other sport I've been involved in, this is one that takes time and hard work to be good at - even for the most gifted and dedicated.

At the end of the day more participation=more exposure=more money for the sport.
