I am, and on a platform with a bar, not wandering round a field with a bag of bats on sticks

Monday, 9th July, start 16:00

Very hot again.

We have two squat racks suitable for powerlifting at Adders, a comp style rack and a power rack, I usually use the power rack as it has a better rack-in option and as it is adjustable it is easier to allow folk to work in. Dave however prefers the power rack. I almost always use the Eleiko and Dave always uses it. Personally I consider it no bad thing to use a different bar from time to time, but that's just me. Usually there isn't a problem as Dave arrives pretty much as I am finishing, so he waits while I finish, we move the bar over and he starts. Simples.

Squat, raw, sleeves and boots on
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
60 x 5
80 x 3
belt on
100 x 2
120 x 1
140 x 1
160 x 1
170 x 1
Dave arrives a bit earlier than usual, I have a few to do yet, seven sets or so, he would have waited but that seemed unfair on him, so I suggested that we strip the bar, he could take it and I would load the Texas and use that. So we did.
180 x F
180 x 1 - Bottle's gone
140 x 3
145 x 3
150 x 3
155 x 3
160 x 3

!80 x F - we all know that means fail but fail can mean so many things.
I will explain.
Normally with the Eleiko I rarely use collars and I have never had a problem, there is clanging and banging but the weights rarely move and when they do they never move much. But the Texas bar is a different kettle of fish, we had noticed when benching with it that the weights slipped on something lovely. The significance of this eluded me. It eludes me no more.
As I walked out the weight, I heard it. I recognized it straight away, the sound of plates moving along the bar, but I could not tell which side so compensation was out of the question. The slow, rhythmical thud, thud, thud, thud of twenty kilo plates hitting the deck indicated that it was on the left, then suddenly it was on my right, the bar gave me a crack on the head as it whipped past, but it's nothing much, a graze, not even a flesh wound.
Dave and Amy kindly reloaded the bar for me and I tried the 180 but as reported my bottle had gone. So we removed a plate and took it from there, with each set some of the bottle returned and now I probably have most of it back.
So there you have it, my adventures from tonight, use collars gentle readers, do not be as foolish as your old, fat friend.

Thank you for your attention.

I use collars out of habit, even on a 60kg set. The only time I don't use them is when I bench heavy alone, just on the off chance I get pinned and have to dump the weights, thankfully this hasn't happened yet. We have a slightly whippy Bison bar, even with collars on it (crap collars, but still collars) on heavy sets sometimes the plates can move an inch or so.

Those are all of the collar related things I can think of at the moment.

I always use a pair of collars that each weigh 0.5kg.

Consequently even though I know that i'm deadlifting 200 kilos, in the back of my head somewhere i'm thinking "That was really 201kg".

It's almost like i'm conning myself into lifting more! Happy Happy Happy

I use those hand spring grip clamp they sell at the hardware store instead of clamps. I think they work better. They look like car battery jumper cables. Do you know what I am speaking of?

Thank you gentlemen,

We have several pairs of spring collars and they proved remarkably effective.

My biggest regret is that after noticing how easily the plates slid onto the new bar, I failed to put two and two together, in fact I didn't even notice that I had two twos to put together. Doh !

Word on the street has it that some English chaps will try to kick a ball between some sticks while some Johnny foreigners try to do the same, after three quarters of this excitement they continue with the same ball but different sticks. If I extend my session a shade tonight I may get to drive on gloriously empty roads. Should this be the case I may just take a detour to celebrate.

I don't dislike football and I do hope England win, but what I completely and utterly fail to understand is the level of joy and excitement that many folk seem capable of allowing this to generate within them.

If I were having my cock sucked by Kylie, whilst playing with Elle McPherson's tits and being handed a cheque for five million quid by Goldie Hawn, would I be happy ? Hell yes, but would I be as demonstrably happy as the average England fan seems to be if England win. No, no I won't be that happy, in fact I would be so far from being that happy it would take the light from "that happy" ten years to reach me

I'm entirely with you on the football, but in the scenario you describe I might well be that happy. Though I would not express it by jumping on ambulances or dancing like a brain-damaged orang.

Always a pleasure to read your log Pete.
Two things. For the sensible types, National football success brings a togetherness that only the weather can match in terms of collective joy and despair, it’s that simple, just a method to break the English awkwardness of having to talk to people.
As far as collars go - I’ve enjoyed the alarmingly plastic “lock jaw” type collars that don’t cost a lot, weigh a lot or take a lot of effort - strength shop sell them in unnecessary colour choices.

"strength shop sell them in unnecessary colour choices."

This made me chuckle, I was on there the other day and thought exactly the same.
