To clear up the rolling issue, in simple terms.

The deadlift by its very nature is a dead stop lift, very little elastic tension in the muscles due to not being compressed under load by anything other than bodyweight and in some cases somewhat of a pull down to the bar – in the squat, bench press and a lot of other movements you have a load compressing the joints and where a muscle elongates applying a coil reflex to it.

In rolling the bar, more of than not done by those who are inflexible they are getting into a position they can’t normally – using the weight to apply pressure to the muscles creating an elasticised tension in the horizontal plane – this is equally said of deadlift suits, in that the rolling motion is assisting the lifter to pre load the suit.

Now the easiest way to release this pressure normally is in rolling the bar back the other way, but as the bar will have inertia rolling towards the lifter and compression is persistent the direction of force will be transferred through approx 80-100 degrees – with the addition of a lifting force the force will naturally dissipate vertically.

So basically it is making the lift easier for the said individual – the same would not be true if a person was able to get into a comfortable position in the first place as there would be no additional load on the muscles.
Does it make them a better deadlifter? Given they are too inflexible to assume a natural position and are forced to do this then no as their muscles and adjoining tissues being tight will not make best use of the levers of motion – so it helps them do it more normally as it were.

Unfortunately that's what many lifters do they try sumo, rather than actually applying themselves and actually learning to do it properly.

You seem to be inferring that switching to sumo will allow anyone to pull more should they simply apply themselves long enough.

I disagree. I have given sumo a serious go on a couple of occasions and got to within 20kg of my best conventional pull, but it simply did not suit me, in the same way that wide stance squatting, or benching with a maximum width grip does not suit some lifters.

Logic says that shortening the range of motion as much as possible ought to make the lift easier, but in reality it (obviously) doesn't always work out like that.

I roll the bar.

I initially started doing it so I could get both hands on the bar when pulling suited. It then became habit so carried over to my raw pulling.

Does it aid the lift? f**k knows. It just feels natural now so if adds a few Kg then game on. Its not breaking any rules.

I was the same! I used to do it even pulling with no suit just to keep my form the same! I think it adds a little but like you said it's not breaking any rules!!

I just stopped purely cause the comps I do are always with a car or a bar that can't be rolled

What about the comps you do that involve max deadlift where you can do it. That extra few KGs you get could mean big points!

Think I remember seeing a few last year that had max dead, not sure if you were in any of them though.

I think its great adds to the atmosphere! If he's going to pull 440k at the end of it he could dance round in a pink tutu for all I care!

Don't get me wrong. I like a bit of showmanship. You know, a bit of Sigmarsson style viking stuff. But whats with all the OCD toe-poking of the bar and walking around like he has 9 batteries shoved up his arse? Just makes him look like a proper f**king mong IMO.

I do agree with that! Unfortunately I haven't had one since 08 when I was having a f**king terrible year anyway! Even there we couldn't do it cause it was on rubber mats that it wouldn't have rolled on!

Yeah I hate it when people look like c**ts like that - still when I turn up in my Armarni jeans and my Deisel T shirt and my £1k shoes I get rapidly put in my place by some 'c**t' out pulling me by 100kgs

Why not adopt the moonwalk as your signature pre-lift 'dance'?

Not really sure what you mean!! This thread was ages ago and it was a joke!! The second bit was about what good deadlifters around there are!
If you are being super sensitive and completely getting your wires crossed then I hope you understand that is your fault. If I am just misunderstanding what you are getting then please explain! If you are trying to imply I am a racist then you are the one with the issue not me!
