I don't think elite deadlifters who use a rolling start are simply 'hoping' it will work for them.

Maybe I've not seen enough world class deadlifters, but isn't it typically more a strongman thing? I understand there are a fair amount of world class deadlifters in strongman, but is this technique seen often on a powerlifting platform? I can't recall seeing it.

When you roll the bar towards you, and your hands are on the bar, what's happening?

The bar stays fixed in your hands and the sleeves rotate. Hence why olympic bars have rotating sleeves.

Nothing there stops you from holding the bar as tight as possible.

Cool, well it obviously works for some, I just don't really understand why. I also don't seem to know an awful lot about bar design either, but hey I'm willing to learn...

And as for high jump, personally I can jump higher from a stationary 2 footed position than if I take a run up. I understand however, that this is not the norm. Do I understand why a high jumper takes a run up? I always presumed I did until you asked me to think about it. At a guess, I'd say because there is a horizontal component involved in high jump, building up some horizontal momentum before taking off allows you to use more of your available force to generate vertical lift. I'm sure there is another reason due to breaking forces redirecting the momentum you built up, and I'm sure this could probably be applied to deadlift as well, but as mentioned before, I seem to be more powerful in a static position.

I think you've answered your own question Tom.

ah, I wasn't sure if that was a load of s**t or not. I guess because I could never get it to work when trying high jump I can't really appreciate how it would be of any benefit to deadlift, but clearly some make it work for them. I'm far too OCD with my deadlift setup to attempt to it while moving...

You don't see many of the top deadlifters in the IPF rolling the bar these days, however you don't actually see conventional deadlift very much. At the Worlds last year only one of the deadlift medalist upto 125kg pulled conventionally.

I just think he got the wrong end of the stick since the last post before his was a year ago and he has been WAY too sensitive to something that wasn't meant as he is taking it!

Never understood why when the rules allow you to pull the bar a far shorter distance using sumo why anybody would pull conventional.

Where's the achievement in pulling conventional and finishing behind the sumo lifters?

I think its great adds to the atmosphere! If he's going to pull 440k at the end of it he could dance round in a pink tutu for all I care!

What a strange comment.

I would certainly agree that every competitive powerlifter ought to at least try it to see if they can pull more, but after a fair chance, if it doesn't suit you, there's not a lot to be done about it.

Unfortunately that's what many lifters do they try sumo, rather than actually applying themselves and actually learning to do it properly.
