Monday 1st June

Squat: 50 x 5,5,5, 90 x 3, 130 x 1, 150 x 1.
Bench: 50 x 5, 60 x 5, 70 x 5, 80 x 5, 90 x 5, 80 x 10.

Been mostly moving big stones and digging today so didn't feel like much in the way of volume. Then again, I never do!

Friday 5th June

DL: 50 x 5, 90 x 5, 130 x 1, 170 x 1, 200 x 1.

That was it because for various reasons I feel like s**t, but I'd promised myself I was going to see how lifting up 200 would feel after my time off. Not too bad. Not 250, but not too bad!

Thanks to Ed and nico for the info on the 5/3/1 - gratefully received. So this is it, my first day to a new stronger me! However, like the idiot I am I forgot that the last set was meant to be for maximum reps... bugger!

You don't have to go maximum reps every time. As someone said already, it is very much a case of " pick your battles." If you feel good, go for as many as possible. some days you just want to do the 5 or whatever, or perhaps one or two more.
Given that you always have a bit of a margin over the 5 (again or whatever) reps you are supposed to get on the last set, it means even those days when you are feeling less than stellar (long game of tennis in the afternoon for exampleWink ), you can get out the reps without to much bother and know you are on target.
The next day when you are bursting with energy (afternnon watching Federer and lazing about), you can go for it and get 15 reps out.

Hehe, yeah spot on, thanks.

Wednesday 10th June

DL: 76 x 5, 96 x 5, 114 x 3, 124 x 5, 144 x 5, 162 x 10.

Got the cold from hell since 2 days (yes, man flu!) and therefore feel like s**t. However, I worked up to a doing 10 reps for my last set, even though there was a pool of snot forming under the bar! It was respiratory failure that got me in the end.

I know what you're thinking, Neil's a f**king hero. I think you might be right.

Actually mate, I wasn't thinking that at all. I was thinking that I've just done 153/8, feeling good and been pleased with that. You've just done 162 for 10 after a couple of months off and with man flu. So what I was actually thinking was...wa**er!

EDIt: just checked on my numbers and by a happy coincidence, my next 5/3/1 deadlift session is 162 as the final set. I will be getting 11 reps even if it kills me and I have to lie down for 2 mins between reps to finish it. The camera will be there to record it for posterity-Neil, I'm coming for you!

My maximums I chose for my first go at 5/3/1 are:-

Mil. press: 60
DL: 190
Bench: 100
Squat: 150

Not sure how it's going to pan out but (looking at the spreadsheet my wife has crafted!) the bare minimums look doable with those numbers as a starting point.
