Hey everyone,

As you can see by the title im new to powerlifting, not new to lifting though... been lifting as bodybuilder for over 4 years, Ive always like going heavy and finally decided why not just train for powelifting and compete?

Anyway hers my current maxes at 86kg.

B- 135kg
S- 200-210kg
D- 230-235kg

Now a couple of questions.
1. Should i be using a belt? I dont even own one and never have.

2. I want to compete but am alittle anxious as what to expect on the day? Do i bring food? Is it true its like 10hours?

3. Where do i start about getting into a meet/registering?

4. Should i buy oly shoes? Currently do everything in socks apart from bench.

5. Is there music at the meets? I always train with headphones which helps me get psyched.

Think thats mainly it at the moment. Hoping these arent stupid questions and people can help.

Appreciate your time.

Thanks

1. Should i be using a belt? I dont even own one and never have.

A belt will help, I prefer a 13mm lever. See if you can try a proper one to get a feel. As you'll be buying kit, maybe go for one from zuluglove. My inzer 13mm forever belt is about 11 years old and still on all original parts.

2. I want to compete but am alittle anxious as what to expect on the day? Do i bring food? Is it true its like 10hours?

Bring food and drink. Overcompensate - you can always take some home. 5-6 hours is normal, but can be 8-10

3. Where do i start about getting into a meet/registering?

Which fed? GBPF is the best drugs tested, BPC and GPC don't do drugs testing.

4. Should i buy oly shoes? Currently do everything in socks apart from bench.

Oly shoes are good for narrower squats. Flat soled like converse are better for wider squats. They're also great for deadlifts.

5. Is there music at the meets? I always train with headphones which helps me get psyched.

BPC and GPC usually have a DJ. GBPF are a little less hardcore. Find videos on YouTube to see the atmosphere. bBPC and GPC is like a rave. GBPF is for old men with slippers.

1. Use a belt. It helps though I am currently deadlifting without one and my strength is around the same.

2. Yeah bring food and lots of water. I have only done one meet, weighed in around 8. First flight of lifters started at ten and the last finished around half 6. Approximately 50 lifters in total competed.

3. Sign up for a federation and check their calender for dates of meets.

4. I use chuck taylors because I prefer a flat shoe to squat but everyone is different.

5. There is music but everytime someone went to lift the music stopped so the lifter could hear commands. Though Think the music might of stayed on during deadlift

Thanks for your input guys, time to get some flat soled shoes and a belt then Happy

Oh and watch a meet at least until I get bored.

Also as far as my numbers, is it any good for my weight class (not sure what this would be haha)

My advice is if you want to have fun then do strongman or if you want to do a proper sport do weightlifting! But if you cant be arsed running around or stretching then stick with powerlifting Tongue

Your numbers will qualify for the british (GBPF) but you wont get a medal.

I suggest you find a more strength/powerlifting orientated gym and go visit beat thing I ever did when starting was get to know other powerlifters

Also you don't want to fall into the mindset if bigfish small pond

Where are you based ?

Surely pound for pound at your weight is the same as at your weight?

Even at u83 u23 Owen Hubbard went something like 260-185-270 (rough numbers) at this years classic.

That's really just an opinion. I went to my first comp and thought it was awesome and wanted to compete ASAP. Admittedly that was a british champs at a big venue with some big name lifters, so not just a regular PL comp.

Going along to a comp before having a go is a good idea.
