still a devious weightlifting bastard Member 43, 14374 posts | Thanks Steve. I was lucky enough to get an Edge 1000 for Christmas and liked it so much I got a cheeky Forerunner off flea bay. Strava may well be my next step into the digital fitness world. Wigan said: Rain this end was too bad for us to get to Pennington this week, bit gutted to miss it, as will miss next week as I've got the joys of a BWL coaching course for two days!!! Such fun!! I reckon the Japanese schoolgirls will be shouting your name by this summer if we ever meet up at a Parkrun. I think I peaked about 18 months ago It was a bad one. Cold too. Is the course just the weekend or is it a couple of them. Sure Mike told me he had to do 2 weekends worth. Also, it's the 21st century now and we can't have schoolies cheering us on. College girls only, for legal reasons.

He's been running OXP for however many years, and has been producing good lifters etc. From Jan next year he won't be allowed to warm them up at the British because he hasn't got the right certificate!!!! Crazy!!!

Have been struggling to find one where the dates fitted with other commitments for the last 12 months. Have previously had one booked that got cancelled last minute, not convinced that this one wont end up going the same way to be honest.

still a devious weightlifting bastard Member 43, 14374 posts | Who's going to be teaching you how to coach weightlifters then Jeff? Were they even born when you first started lifting? lol Kudos to you for doing it. I would really struggle with it. I'm sure they'll realise that they aren't actually teaching you anything in a very short space of time. On the off chance that you don't pass would you not be able to coach lifters or would you be able to get them to national championships then be deemed not worthy to do so once they were there? I don't get the point of it all.

On the off chance that you don't pass would you not be able to coach lifters or would you be able to get them to national championships then be deemed not worthy to do so once they were there? I don't get the point of it all. I'll go with an open mind. I get the impression that the bulk of the two days will be teaching me how to coach / generic coaching skills. The gymnastics one I have done was much the same. Then they will eventually show me how to teach the lifts. I will no doubt need to do a fair bit of tongue biting. The whole rationale is with the coaching changes in BWL are to bring it in line with the rest of the major (Olympic) sports and to professionalise it all, and in doing so satisfy the likes of Sport England / Lottery etc that it is a proper sport deserving of funding, as well as insurers. I'm a qualified level 1 gymnastics coach, but there are limits on what i am allowed (and insured) to coach. I cannot run a session without a level 2 coach (or above) present, and even with them present there are only certain things i can coach without them overseeing (or at least giving the ok). I cannot attend any competition in a coaching capacity without a level 2 coach or above with me. Even a level 2 can only take certain level of gymnasts to comp, depending on the level of the stuff they will be doing, and then they would need a level 3 there etc etc. It's this type of approach that BWL is adopting, it's nothing new. Under the new BWL rules the Level 1 certificate, entitles you to teach the lifts, ideally under the supervision of a more qualified coach. You are not supposed to develop programmes, and you are not qualified (from Jan next year) to coach at BWL competitions, you need the level 2 qual for that. All a bit silly for people that have been around for a long time, but less so for people new to the sport (thinking about all the Crossfit / weightlifting coaches popping up now). The risk is that all the old guard are usually part of traditional W/L clubs without the funds (£750 for the two courses), to get their coaches qualified, whereas the commercial gym that W/L now (eg Crossfit places), have the money to get the quals, but their coaches (in the main) wont have the pedigree in the sport the same as the old guys. You could then have a warm up room full of mediocre (or less experienced) coaches while there are a lot better guys sat out front not allowed in. So in short, i get the qual from weekend, i can teach the lifts, but need the level 2 qual to be able to coach at a BWL comp. One question I have is, that Northern Weightlifting are not funded by BWL, so do their comps count as a BWL event, if so you would need the level 2 qual to even have people lifting in regional comps??

Its very different, going from lifting with a big group of friends to mostly solitary training with a big lump of cardio thrown in.
